KAYAK KRATE

Kayak anglers can now upgrade from the old milk crate to this tough, sleek and supremely functional storage crate by Wilderness Systems. An open main compartment with removable dividers accommodates larger gear and tackle boxes, while smaller items can be stowed in the secondary (and see-though) lid storage. It comes standard with four customizable rod holders, lash-down points and is highly water resistant. That’s a feature Outdoor Canada associate editor and enthusiastic kayak angler Scott Gardner appreciated while field-testing the Krate in a teeming downpour this summer.

HOOK2

In late 2017, Lowrance launched its HOOK2 series of fishfinders/chartplotters. These new units boast numerous high-end, easy-to-use features, yet at a surprisingly affordable price. The key feature of the HOOK2 line is Lowrance Autotuning, which actively corrects the CHIRP sonar settings for the clearest underwater view. So if you’re not an electronics expert, that means more time fishing and less time scrolling though menus to make manual adjustments to your settings. Higher-end units include side-scan and down-scan imaging, and even the smallest model has a wide-screen display. Most models also feature full navigational capability and pre-loaded, high-detail mapping. HOOK2 units come in 12-, 9-, 7-, 5- and 4-inch display sizes, ranging from US$99 to US$1,499.

Simply put, this is a sport optics necessity for keeping cameras, scopes or even your glasses clean and clear. The LensPen device has a retractable natural brush at one end, and a soft cleaning tip at the other, and safely and effectively removes dust and fingerprints from lenses, eyepieces and filters. Does it work? Well, Outdoor Canada associate editor Scott Gardner has kept a LensPen in his camera case since 2012, and it's saved more than a few shots. This new kit includes an Original LensPen for scope and binocular lenses, a MiniPro for action camera lenses, FogKlear anti-fog cloth and a MicroKlear microfiber cloth, all in a handy carrying bag with belt loop.

FLY-FISHING ADVENT CALENDAR

Sure to make any fly angler smile for nearly a whole month, the Fly Fishing Advent Calendar contains a high-quality, waterproof fly case and 23 premium, hand-crafted freshwater flies. Produced by Vancouver Island’s Allure Tackle, the calendar is the brainchild of company founder (and Outdoor Canada photo contest 3rd place winner in the fishing category) Mark Falvai. “Why should Advent calendars be just for kids,” Falvai asks, “Wouldn’t it be nice as an adult to receive a fun little gift 24 days in a row leading up to Christmas?” Yes, that would be nice, Mark, we couldn’t agree more. And if it's too late to get and start an advent calendar this year, you can still get all 24 items in a handsome gift set.

POCKET HAMMER KIT

A modern take on the traditional slingshot, the Pocket Shot shoots projectiles via a unique rubber pocket instead of stretchable tubes or bands. Paired up with the Pocket Hammer handle, it’s been called a “slingshot on steroids” and can shoot up to 350 feet per second. That’s two to three times the rate of a regular slingshot. Meanwhile, you can also shoot arrows with the attachable whisker cap. The complete kit (US$99) comes with one Hammer handle, one standard pouch, one pro-pouch, three arrow pouches, one arrow cap, and four nook covers. With a little practice, the Pocket Hammer is remarkably accurate, and though it might not be viable (or legal) to take down small game in your area, it’s a lot of fun to shoot targets and a great way to get kids busy in the outdoors.

FRESHBACK DETERGENT

If you’re like many outdoorsfolk, you’ve got a pile of hunting clothes stuffed into a duffle bag that you only open during certain times of the year. Are the clothes, or the bag, starting to get a little ripe? Enter Freshback laundry detergent. Made for active people and outdoor enthusiasts, Freshback uses a molecular bonding process that promises to keep your apparel odour-free for an entire year or 25 washes! Using food-grade material, this non-toxic laundry treatment thoroughly cleans your clothes and locks in freshness with no perfumes or scents. And it works. After a wet and soggy camping trip this past summer, managing editor Bob Sexton used it to successfully remove the smell of sour milk from a duffle bag.

Hook Sinker’s line of toques, caps, t-shirts and hoodies is billed as “lifestyle apparel for those of us who love being on the water.” Based in Kingston, Ontario, the company was founded by four friends who love fishing. And their passion for the sport is definitely reflected in the clothing, albeit in an understated way. After launching the hip clothes, a press release stated: “People want to represent who they are by what they wear, they also want something that looks good, Hook Sinker Apparel does exactly this.
