NORTHERN LIGHTS COUNTRY, YUKON

Brilliant aurora borealis and big grayling, pike and trout

Formed in the earth’s upper atmosphere by electrically charged particles from the sun, the spectacular Northern Lights are most commonly pale green or pink, but they can also appear in red, yellow, blue and violet hues. Whatever the palette, the only way to properly see the aurora borealis in its full glory is under cover of darkness. And one of the best places for viewing is the Yukon starting in mid-August, which is also prime fishing time for late-summer lakers, pike and Arctic grayling. Just visit any of the countless lakes within easy reach of Whitehorse, such as Laberge, Marsh and Tagish. For lakers, Outdoor Canada contributor Brad Fenson suggests trolling spoons at higher speeds. Says Fenson: “Don’t give them time to think about it.”
