Constructed of tough 410-denier nylon, the streamlined Safe Passage Guide Sling Pack (US$129) from Orvis features a foam-padded strap, complete with a magnetic forceps sheath. The pack also sports a tool-attachment system, water-bottle holder, several inside pockets and dividers, and a moulded back panel designed to help keep you cool. OC associate editor Scott Gardner recently used the sling on a beach-fishing trip, and it performed very well, even protecting his camera during an unexpected plunge.

Suunto’s water-resistant Traverse Alpha ($729) boasts extensive hunting- and fishing-specific features, including a compass, altimeter, moon phase calendar, sunrise and sunset alerts and red backlight for nighttime use. Along with route navigation, the Traverse Alpha also records important locations such as scrapes, rubs, treestands and fishing holes. The GPS/GLONASS watch even has a shot detection function, automatically creating a waypoint whenever a shot is fired.
