The 10 Best Darn Places An Angler Can Call Home
by Paul Marriner
Corner Brook (Newfoundland & Labrador)

towns
One of the river’s coveted Atlantic salmon.
Sure, we’ve all heard about the economic woes bedevilling Newfoundland and Labrador, but when it comes to Corner Brook, the province’s second largest city, things are looking decidedly up. Already an important business and administrative centre for the west side of the Rock, Corner Brook has been diversifying its economy in recent years, especially in the tourism, culture and recreation sectors. The town also serves as the headquarters for the region’s healthcare services, and it’s home to such major post-secondary institutions as Sir Wilfred Grenfell College and the College of the North Atlantic. All this means that Corner Brook boasts more services and things to do—not to mention employment opportunities—than might be expected based on such a relatively small population. Along with a good selection of fine restaurants, theatres and pubs, Corner Brook also benefits from an extensive sports and conference centre, which was built for the 1999 Canada Winter Games. But with the world-renowned Humber River running into Humber Bay just to the east of the city, the main attraction for anglers has to be the opportunity to tackle the mighty Atlantic salmon.

THE FISH
Atlantic salmon; brook trout (sea-run and resident); cod; mackerel.
Each season, dozens of fish weighing in at more than 30 pounds are caught and released on the lower Humber, which has yielded salmon as big as a record 58-pound, fly-caught specimen. As for brook trout, the numbers depend on how far you’re willing to hike upriver from town, but a season’s average is likely to hover around 11 inches. The Humber aside, good fishing can also be found in any of three lakes, four rivers and numerous ponds within a half-hour’s drive of Corner Brook. Then there’s the mackerel runs in The Bay of Islands, where the catches can be huge, as well as the short cod jigging season. Off the water, the outdoor life continues: hunting, golfing, sailing, hiking, skiing and snowmobiling are also popular local pursuits. All this makes Corner Brook a great place for lovers of the outdoors, and anglers in particular.
