At a series of five public meetings around the Greater Toronto Area, fisheries mangers will present a draft of the region’s new Urban Recreational Fisheries Plan.
The first meeting happens October 17 in Oshawa, and additional meetings will be held in Ajax, Pickering, Toronto and Mississauga over the next few weeks. According to the organizers, it’s important to get as many anglers and interested citizens as possible to the meetings, in order to demonstrate that urban fishing is a vital interest to the outdoor community.
Issues tackled in the Urban Fisheries Plan include improving access to shoreline fishing, taking a systematic approach to improving fish habitat, and promoting the diverse fishing opportunities available along the waterfront. Public feedback will be incorporated into the final document, which is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2014.
The plan covers the north shore of Lake Ontario, from the western border of the City of Mississauga, to the eastern border of Durham Region. Its goal is to integrate information on the state of the fisheries and fish habitat with existing plans and strategies. This will create a guiding document for all partners and other interested parties hoping to improve urban recreational fishing opportunities.
More information on the plan is available at Aquatic Habitat Toronto. It was prepared by Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and four Conservation Authorities (Toronto and Region, Credit Valley, Central Lake Ontario, and Ganaraska Region), including other partners such as municipalities, federal and provincial agencies and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters.
