The Georgina Fishing Series has new owners. Rosa Sharpe and Charles Ross of Lures & Tours, the pocket-sized guides to Ontario fishing destinations, announced they bought the tournament series in early November.

“This acquisition fits well within our goals at Lures & Tours to increase awareness of sportfishing as a major tourism driver in Ontario,” Sharpe said.

With the Canadian Ice Fishing Championship as its flagship tournament, the GFS also includes the Winter Perch Attack Ice Fishing Tournament, the Spring Perch Attack Fishing Tournament, the Great Georgina Ice Fishing Derby and the Lake Simcoe Evening Bass Tournament Series.

According to a media release, ensuring the future of the CIFC was a major factor in Lures & Tours’ decision to buy the series. Considered by many as the country’s premier ice fishing event, the CIFC benefits both local and provincial tourism, Sharpe said.

“The Web site alone has become a major draw for people interested in fishing Lake Simcoe,” Sharpe explained. “We plan to grow this event considerably and draw more attention to ice fishing in Ontario.”

The first CIFC took place on Lake Simcoe in 1994. A board of directors ran it until 2005, when Rocky Madsen took over the operation. He created additional events in the years since, which, together with the CIFC, make up the Georgina Fishing Series.
