Best Fishing Electronic: HydroWave
HydroWave

Mounted on your electric trolling motor, transom or gunnel, this transducer-sized device emits electronic signals that simulate the sound and vibrations of baitfish—in effect ringing the dinner bell for predatory fish and igniting a feeding frenzy. How effective is the waterproof unit at triggering bites? Bass pro Kevin VanDam attributes much of his recent success to the HydroWave. More Info: HydroWave

Best Navigation App: Navionics App

Best Navigation App: Navionics App
HydroWave

Available for iPhone, iPad and Android phones, this app knits together every Canadian Hydrographic Service map, making for the perfect planning tool. You can lay down waypoints, share honey holes with friends, find the nearest marina, overlay satellite imagery and confirm tides, currents and moon phases. If you fish big waters, you can even plan travel routes—enter your normal cruising speed and the app will compute how long it will take and how much fuel you’ll need to reach your destination. And if your device has a built-in GPS, the unit can serve as a backup to your boat’s chartplotter. More Info: Navionics

Best Sonar/Chartplotter: NSS

Best Sonar/Chartplotter: NSS

Simrad’s NSS sonar/chartplotters are the most intuitive units I’ve ever seen, thanks in part to the touch-screen technology. Anglers familiar with iPads, iPhones and BlackBerrys will devour the NSS7, NSS8 and NSS12 (seven-, eight- and 12-inch screens, respectively) because laying down a waypoint is as simple as tapping your finger on the screen. What really wowed me is when I turned on the “bottom colouring” feature, I saw how precisely I could separate and detect bottom-hugging fish such as walleye. More Info: Simrad

Best Safety Device: Autotether

Best Safety Device: Autotether
HydroWave

For whatever reason, many anglers fail to tether themselves to their boat motor’s kill switch. Well, now they don’t need to—at least not physically—thanks to the Autotether wireless lanyard system. Just clip the system’s sensor to your PFD or shirt pocket and, should you fall overboard, it will automatically transmit a signal to a receiver connected to the engine cut-off, stopping the motor and sounding an alarm.
