Annapolis River
American shad are the hardest-fighting fish in freshwater, and Nova Scotia’s Annapolis River is the spot to catch them. When the bite is on in May and June, expect to hook dozens of fish in the four- to 10-pound range. The lure of choice is what the locals call a “dart,” a 1/16- to 1/8-ounce fluorescent red or chartreuse jig. To handle these light baits, use a seven- to eight-foot medium-light or light-action spinning outfit spooled with four- to eight-pound-test line. Local guide Dave Doggett offers both wading and boat excursions.
