A recent report by the International Joint Commission says that thanks to climate change, Lake Superior is one of the fastest-changing large lakes in the world. In this episode of Blue Fish Radio, producer/host Lawrence Gunther talks to Dr. Jay Austin, from the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Large Lakes Observatory. Dr. Austin’s team has been monitoring the lake and reporting a number of concerning findings, including warming summer water temperatures, an increase in blue-green algal blooms, a decrease in winter ice cover and an increase in shoreline erosion due to intensifying storms. Dr. Austin explains what all this means for the future of the Great Lakes, and how governments need to respond.
