Blue Fish Radio: Can Wild Atlantic Salmon Stage a Return?

Patrick Walsh

Taking Action to Save the Wild Atlantic Salmon

A conversation with Dan Kircheis of the National Marine Fisheries Service

Outdoor Canada is pleased to present Blue Fish Radio—podcasts about the future of fish and fishing in Canada. The program, produced and hosted by Lawrence Gunther, is dedicated to sharing first-hand angling knowledge, scientific discoveries and supporting local champions who protect and enhance their waters.

Once considered North America’s premiere gamefish, Altantic salmon have been virtually wiped out from U.S. waters and are in serious trouble in many Canadian waters. Now the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service is launching an action plan, with the goal of returning the Atlantic salmon to its place as the king of east coast sportfish.

How will it happen? In this episode of Blue Fish Radio, Lawrence Gunther talks to Dan Kircheis of the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service about its multi-pronged strategy, which includes negotiations with Greenland, the removal of dams and blocking genetically engineered aquaculture salmon being farmed in U.S. territorial waters.
