2 simple tactics for catching more fish on traditional wet flies

WET FLY VS. NYMPH

Before we get into the tactics, let’s clear up any lingering confusion about the difference between wet flies and nymphs. Of modern design, and often highly realistic looking, nymphs (above right) represent immature aquatic insects drifting helplessly in the current. That’s why nymph patterns only work when fished on a dead drift, usually inches from bottom. This technique is quite difficult to do well, but it’s unbeatable once you’ve mastered it. Wet flies (above left), on the other hand, imitate insects swimming or emerging from their nymphal form, when they are uniquely vulnerable. That makes them attractive to fish whether they’re drifting, rising or darting, and more forgiving to fish with.
