Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
For Canadian outdoorsfolk ready to leap boldly into the future of electric vehicles, 2018 brings the Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a well-reviewed compact SUV/crossover. Propulsion is based on a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine mated to 80-horsepower electric motor, direct drive to the front wheels. At the rear is another 80-horsepower electric motor, and there’s a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery pack located under the floor. That positioning also means there’s a negligible loss of utility and cargo space. The PHEV is primarily a front-wheel drive, but there’s a torque shift to the rear depending on conditions. Sweetening the deal, several provinces offer a rebate on the vehicle’s purchase price: $2,500 in B.C., $4,000 in Quebec and $9,555 in Ontario.
