Want to look cool while fly fishing? It’s about presence, poise and just a hint or flair

BEHAVIOUR

On the water, coolness is impossible to fake, but also not hard to achieve. Demonstrating mastery of a skill—but not in a showy way—is the pinnacle of cool. You don’t need to be a world-class angler. To look like you really know what you’re doing, stick to the basics: shorter casts and simple tactics. A clean 25-foot cast is much more impressive—to both experts and non-anglers—than a failed 50-footer. So, focus on smooth casting with a minimum of false casts and no frantic flailing. Surprisingly, the simplest move in fly fishing, the roll cast, is actually very elegant, and a real crowd-pleaser. The goal is to make your fishing look effortless, but not careless.

Ultimately, though, fly fishing is such a rich, layered pursuit that it’s inherently cool—more so than any trend, brand or stereotype. If you show up as your authentic, unapologetic self, without posing or affectation, you’re already most of the way there.

Even small fish deserve respect

UNCOOL MOVES

Want to look like a doofus? Here’s how:

  • False cast eight times for a 30-foot shot.
  • Change flies after every cast.
  • Handle fish (including small ones) disrespectfully.
  • The second you hook up, shout, “It’s a good one!”
  • Provide a full-volume play-by-play while fighting a fish.
  • Wear more dangling accessories than a Christmas tree.
  • Offer unsolicited advice (especially if it’s wrong).
