FISHING KAYAKS
Opening up an entire new world of angling possibilities

It’s been 25 years since the first purpose-built fishing kayaks hit the water. What began as a niche experiment—basically bolting rod holders onto traditional recreational kayaks—has become a whole new way of fishing. Today, fishing kayaks make up 40 per cent of all kayaks sold in North America. Evidence of this popularity can be seen strapped to car roofs all season long. The growing presence and availability of these little plastic boats has also been a transformative and democratizing force in Canadian sportfishing.
Historically, kayaks were considered tippy and difficult to use. After two decades of innovation, however, modern fishing kayaks are now intuitive to operate and extremely stable, with tackle storage, transducer mounts, adjustable seats and other angling features. They also remain easy to customize for anyone with minimal DIY skills. Pedal-drive propulsion has been another game-changer, allowing hands-free fishing and easier boat control.

More importantly, fishing kayaks have opened up countless fishing opportunities for more people, and in more places. For under a thousand bucks, serious anglers can now get a very capable fishing vessel that is easy to store and transport, doesn’t require fuel, needs minimal maintenance and can be launched anywhere. It’s the perfect solution for those longing for access to better water, but who don’t have the budget, space, time or energy to deal with a big boat.
The stealth, shallow draft and portability of fishing kayaks also gets you into shallow water and remote spots where powerboaters can’t—or won’t—go. For many of us, an added bonus is sitting close to the water’s surface while moving silently along. This often makes you feel like part of nature, rather than an intruder, allowing close encounters with fish and wildlife. It’s a reminder that, for all our high-tech fishing gear, simple approaches can sometimes yield the richest rewards.
