TOYOTA: 4RUNNER

High, tall and broad, the 2021 4Runner is at the burly end of crossover SUVs, inspiring Driving.ca to call it “a Cliff bar on wheels,” and Edmunds to quip that “the 4Runner looks like Bill and Ted time-warped it in from the 1980s.” But the 4Runner looks tough, because is tough. It’s one of the only crossover SUVs built on an actual truck frame, with a solid axle rear and selectable 4WD. As expected, the 4Runner’s tech goodies, ride and fuel economy lean heavily toward the spartan, but it substitutes plenty of cargo space, towing power and rugged off-road capability.
