Though normally a no-no on cast iron, abrasive cleaning products such as steel wool and scouring pads (or in extreme cases, a wire wheel brush/drill combo) are needed to remove rust. Don’t worry about ruining the seasoned layer because the damage is already done. The idea is to get down to bare metal so you can season the cookware all over again.
