#3 CHEMICALS
A cheap, lightweight option is to use iodine or chlorine tablets or drops to kill pathogens. As with boiling, however, they can’t remove particles. Chemicals also require more time to work, and they leave the water with an unpleasant taste. They pose a health risk if used for a long period, as well. Still, it’s a good idea to include such chemical treatments in your survival kit as a back-up to filtering and boiling.
