Fishing stars don’t always need sponsorships and huge followings to inspire us

Ah, the excitement of breaking open the blister package of a stylish new lure that’s been shamelessly endorsed by a favourite fishing star. Although these days, doesn’t it seem there are more fishing celebrities than new baits? Maybe so, but the freshwater wisdom from at least a few fishing legends will always live rent free in my head.

I grew up reeling in every bit of information I could from early outdoor media adopters. They revolutionized the Scuttlebutt Lodge approach to telling fishing stories by also going deeper into educational waters. Their outdoor know-how went beyond Saturday morning television, spreading into widely shared hook-and-bullet magazines, local radio stations, fishing consumer shows and, eventually, YouTube and social media. In turn, that inspired many of today’s angling influencers, who are also the real deal when it comes to normalizing catch-and-release and ethical fishing behaviours, as well as encouraging more people to get hooked on the healthy and active fishing lifestyle.

The greatest fishing personas will always still speak to everyday anglers, not just the elites. Every catch they hold up for the camera is intended to draw attention to the sport, not glamourize themselves. Their passion is honest and contagious, representing fishing as it should be—fun, enriching and accessible for all. Some famous pros even use their platform to promote conservation organizations, fisheries management and habitat protection. They also serve our national pride, as witnessed by the Canadian flag flying over the world’s most competitive bass-fishing stages.

In the end, though, today’s most important fishing role models don’t need tournament wins, corporate sponsors or an online fan base. They can be great ambassadors instead with just a two-stroke and a tinny, and a special young fishing guest ready to learn the ropes. They are the true legends, giving freely of their time and knowledge—and setting the stage for the next generation of fishing stars.
