Six crucial knots every fly angler needs to know—and know well

NON-SLIP MONO LOOP
For connecting larger flies to the leader
This knot is strong, versatile and easy to tie, yet it remains the most underrated and underused knot in all of fly fishing. Flies have a lot less inherent action than conventional lures, which doesn’t matter with wee little insect flies. It’s an issue, however, with patterns that imitate minnows, crayfish and other bigger edibles. To make them a lot more lively in the water—whether they’re drifting or being actively retrieved—simply tie them on with the non-slip mono loop. I use this knot for any fly bigger than my thumbnail; it’s just one of those little things that makes a big difference.
