WOLVES
Hunted from Quebec west to B.C. and up into the territories, wolves are extremely crafty and wary, making them one of Canada’s most challenging game animals. Though many wolves are taken opportunistically each year by hunters who happen to stumble upon them while hunting other game, the most reliable hunting method is baiting. Just erase any thoughts you may have of sitting comfortably 30 metres from your bait on a warm June evening, as you might while hunting spring black bears.
Instead, you’re much more likely to be sitting in frigid winter conditions, watching a bait 200 metres away for hours on end. There’s no telling when a wolf, or wolves, might appear, so you need to be constantly vigilant—you may only get one opportunity over several days of sitting, so you can’t afford to be caught snoozing. While a large male can weigh up to 150 pounds or more, a wolf is not an easy target at 200 metres. Miss your first shot and you probably won’t have another opportunity. A wolf down is a wolf earned, rewarding patience, perseverance and shooting skills.
