LYNX
B.C. is the only province with a general lynx-hunting season; everywhere else in Canada, lynx are categorized as a furbearer and therefore only available to registered trappers. The key to this hunt is finding fresh tracks in the snow, then following them. Running these beautiful cats with hounds is the most popular tactic, although calling and even spot-and-stalk hunts can be effective. Depending on the region and the outfitter, hunts take place from November through February, so hunters are advised to come prepared for cold, snowy conditions.
Standing only 24 inches tall—a large male weighs 25 to 30 pounds—these elusive cats are not a very big target. So, unless you tree one, you’ll need to be quick and accurate on the trigger.
