How to pick the best axe for the job at hand

SPECIALTY AXES

Axes that fill specific roles include carpenters’ axes, carving axes, broad axes, throwing axes and more. Another specialty design, the hunter’s axe (above), features a rounded poll, or butt, to aid in skinning big game. Whichever axe you choose, maintain the wooden handle (if it has one) with linseed oil, and oil or paint the blade to prevent rust. Inspect the head before each use, ensuring it’s tight on the handle. Also, be sure to regularly inspect the blade for nicks and keep it sharp with a file or sharpening stone—a sharp axe is more efficient and safer to use than a dull one.
