The next day, things came together. Though for extra drama, I didn’t hook my rooster until early afternoon, just minutes before we had to give up and head back to the beach. Globally, roosterfish average around 20 pounds, but mine was a solid 45 pounds. After half a dozen screaming runs, and battling the fish for almost half an hour in 40 C heat, it was all I could do to balance it on my lap for a photo. Was landing it worth travelling 10,000 kilometres? Cock-a-doodle-doo!
