OC Getaways: Lake trout at Silent Lake Provincial Park

Livin’ it up, yurt-style

Situated in classic Canadian Shield country, the small lake has good bass fishing, but its 75-foot depths also hide lake trout. I’d also heard that in spring, shortly after ice out, you could catch lakers up shallow. But as much as I enjoy camping, I’m not keen to do it in May. The perfect solution: avoid the chill and bugs by staying in one of the park’s new yurts. It was a good call—even though it dropped to 5C at night, we were toasty warm.
