BEDDING DOWN

To choose the right sleeping set-up for your needs, consider where and what time of year you plan to use it, and how you’ll carry it.

Bags

Mummy-shaped bags are warm and pack small, but they significantly restrict movement. Down insulation is lightweight and durable, but synthetic is much more affordable. And keep in mind, if you’re staying in a cabin or camping during summer, you may not need a bag designed for the Himalayas.

Pads

Sleeping preferences differ, so try out a pad before buying it. Inflatables are soft and pack well, but they can leak and offer little insulation from the cold ground. Foam is tough, but bulkier and firmer. If packing space permits, take one of each and stack them.
