You only need basic trout equipment

We tried a variety of presentations for trout. I got a couple of fish jigging a spoon, but our most successful tactic was simply trolling shiny spoons on a long line. In particular, we liked Williams’ one-ounce Bully spoon (below), and the classic Williams Wabler, a few feet behind a Lake Clear flasher (below, lower) .

And here’s a tip for my fellow kayak anglers: We did a lot better when we took the rods out of our holders, and just held them in our laps while trolling. This made it much easier to feel—and convert—the relatively light bites we were getting.
