Dams are often considered positive landscape features, because they can generate power, provide recreational opportunities, block invasive species, and prevent contaminant and disease transfer upstream. The flip side is that barriers can also reduce species diversity, fragment habitats and impair animal movements. So how do we balance interests? Host Lawrence Gunther speaks with Marc Gaden from the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission, about a creative upcoming dam project (above) designed to allow up- and downstream passage of desirable fish species, while simultaneously blocking or removing invasives.
