Leeches are one of the all-time great baits. Here’s how to fish them correctly

THE BASICS

Leeches are native to most freshwater systems in Canada, where they thrive in the shallows. As leeches move, their bodies stretch and ripple erratically, which tantalizes fish of all species. As a bonus, they have a strong odour and leave a scent trail as they travel along, further helping fish zero in on them for a tasty snack.

Ribbon leeches are the species most commonly used for fishing. While these squiggly, blackish-brown critters have suckers on one end that can attach to your hand or fingers, they’re not bloodsuckers like some other leech species. The larger, round sucker end is what ribbon leeches use to anchor themselves in place, and it’s totally harmless. Their mouths are situated on the narrower, tube-like end where they feed on bottom debris and small invertebrates.
