TARPON SPIN

This badass travel rod is designed by Quebec shop Peche Sud, which specializes in hard-to-find saltwater fishing gear for travelling anglers. It’s a medium-heavy, three-piece, eight-foot spinning rod, that packs into a 35-inch case, which will fit in most overhead airline compartments. Just note: That’s a medium-heavy rating by saltwater standards, so this is not a bass stick—it’s not even a muskie stick. (In the bluewater, a muskie stick is about the right strength for catching bait.)

The long-handled Tarpon Spin is intended for two-handed casting, to throw one- to four-ounce lures long distances, while still having the backbone to fight truly strong fish, including jacks and tarpon. It’s outfitted with a saltwater super grade EVA grip, sturdy spigot ferules and Fuji’s K-series, tangle-free guides. In 2018, I went kayak fishing in Panama, and arrived a little underprepared for the Wild Coast’s giant fish. So on my return visit, I packed a Tarpon SPIN (paired with a Daiwa BG 5000, FYI). And boy, did it do the job (above). More info: www.pechesud.com
