Lake Joseph, Lake of Bays and Lake Muskoka in central Ontario’s cottage country promise largemouth bass approaching seven pounds and smallmouths almost as big. The best time to target these popular waters is in the fall once the summer crowds have left, says guide Wayne Barlow of Fishing Muskoka. His secret to catching big bass is to first find massive schools of suspended silvery smelt—the lunkers are never far away.
