These 4 crayfish flies are straightforward to tie and easy to fish
Clouser Deep Minnow
HOOK: Standard wet fly or saltwater, sizes 2 to 8 (or as large as 3/0 when making Clousers for bass, pike or saltwater)
EYES: Dumbbell weights
BELLY: Bucktail, often lighter colour than wing
WING: Bucktail, over a few strands of Krystal Flash
The Clouser (as it’s known all over the world) is an nearly universal fly that can be jigged, swum or hopped along the bottom. In that latter style, it makes a simple but effective crayfish imitation, especially in rivers, where the flowing water give the bucktail more movement. It’s quite simple to tie, but as this video offers a few tricks for working with bucktail, which make for a much neater fly.
