Our fishing editor shares his top tactics for tackling big autumn lakers, walleye, pike and bass
The fall is an excellent time to catch some of the biggest fish that prowl our vast country’s countless waterbodies. Across the land, hefty lake trout, walleye, northern pike and bass gather in ever greater numbers at this time of year, fattening up like bears to prepare for the winter ahead. And with the fall turnover in lakes complete, you can find these fish throughout the water column, using every structure and cover option available.
Best of all, you can wake up later in the fall, launch your boat at noon and still have the lake all to yourself. What’s not to like about that? Of course, making the most of your fall day on the water requires paying close attention to critical seasonal details, and using the proper tackle to catch each species. Here are my personal favourite go-to lures and techniques for getting in on the fall action.
