LESSON PLAN
When teaching a beginner how to fly fish, stick to the basics

#2 KEEP IT SIMPLE
Resist using jargon about entomology, rod physics, leader design and other fly-fishing arcana. Just hand your student an easy-to-cast rod, a simple leader and a single, unweighted fly. Avoid weighted flies, which are harder to cast, and don’t even think about rigs with split shot or strike indicators. And other than sunglasses, which are essential for eye safety, don’t festoon your student—or yourself—with tools and gadgets; they just get in the way. All you truly need are nippers, forceps and a couple of flies.
