There is no shortage of outfitters and lodges in the region, but for the do-it-yourself visitor who prefers self-guided fishing, hiking and exploring, Finlayson Point Provincial Park is a terrific destination. Temagami is a massive and, in many places, very open lake. But the park sits on a tree-covered peninsula on Lake Temagami’s Northeast Arm, surrounded by a great deal of sheltered water, that’s easy to explore and fish with a small boat. Pictured are my longtime companion Julie Blair, and my good pal Mark Ventresca, doing just that. (Though if you’ve got a bigger boat, there’s a ramp and boat basin with docks.)
