Where in the world can you catch more than a half-dozen muskies a day?

THE FISH

A naturally occurring and sustaining population, the majority of the muskies in Lake St. Clair are the spotted variety, though barred, tiger or clear fish are sometimes caught, too. Known as the fish of 10,000 casts, a single muskie in the boat on many waters would be considered a good day out. That’s definitely not the case on Lake St. Clair. Between the two of us, Ted and I caught eight muskies, including my personal best, a 45-incher (above) that weighed about 22 pounds.  Ted also caught his PB—a chunky 38-incher. Meanwhile, the lake’s record is a 57¼ inch leviathan caught and released in 2018. Whatever their size, though, muskies are aggressive, they fight hard and they’re a blast to catch. “The only thing that’s guaranteed is you never know what they’re going to do,” Fleming says, “And they’ll prove me wrong 100 per cent of the time.”
