If you want a true test of your angling skills, Belize has very reliable fishing for adult, 100-pound-plus tarpon (above), which are extraordinarily strong and acrobatic.

I had the chance to watch one of BRL’s other guests (above left) battle a six-foot tarpon for about 20 minutes. And I know it was six feet long, because I saw it leap a couple of times. The power displayed by that tarpon as it towed their boat around was simply astonishing. And for a true casting challenge, the ocean flats also have good numbers of maddeningly spooky permit (above, right)—one of the most desired prizes in all of saltwater angling.
