9 reasons why Canadian anglers will love fishing in Belize

#4  There’s an excellent sportfishing infrastructure

The elite Caribbean gamefish have never been exploited in Belize, and it is, in some ways, an up-and-coming destination, yet a handful of adventurous anglers have been coming here for decades. That means there are some excellent and established lodges, plus skilled and reliable independent guides you can hire for a day or two.

For my visit, I chose the lovely and incredibly welcoming Belize River Lodge (above). Boasting historic mahogany buildings in a lush and roadless jungle setting, BRL is the first fishing lodge built in Belize, and has been operating continuously since 1961. The lodge is just a few kilometres upriver from the ocean, but it’s also literally just 10 minutes from the airport (five minutes by car, and five by boat).
