#14  POODLE

Poodles as gun dogs?! That’s exactly what they were originally bred to be. Reputed to be the most intelligent of all dog breeds, the standard poodle is a loyal and keen canine, and a true pleasure to train. Remarkably versatile dogs with plenty of stamina and impressive agility, they are well suited for the pursuit of both upland game birds and waterfowl.

First developed in Germany more than 400 years ago for retrieving ducks, the poodle is a strong swimmer with a naturally curly, water-resistant coat. The national dog of France, where it’s known as the caniche, or “duck dog,” the poodle comes in three colours: white, black or apricot. As an added bonus, this breed rarely sheds it coat and is considered to be hypoallergenic.
