#5  ENGLISH SETTER

One of the oldest gun dog breeds, the elegant English setter has roots in Britain dating back to the 15th century. A delight to watch as they enthusiastically work a field, English setters will abruptly freeze up and set—hunching low with a front paw raised—the moment they scent and pinpoint a hidden upland bird.

This historic breed features a long silky coat that has a base of white with varying specks and flecks of black, brown and tan. A gentle, relatively uncommon breed, the English Setter can make a wonderful family pet while remaining exceptionally keen to seek out feathered fowl at every opportunity. This energetic, medium-sized dog has clearly been bred for endurance in the field.
